  • Interruptions to contact.

  • Gestalt dialogic method as proposed By Martin Buber and the I-THOU way of relating.

  • Clinical Phenomenology as a method of investigating the therapist-client relationship.

  • Field Theory application to Gestalt therapy.

  • Dream work and experiment in awareness raising.

What is the Gestalt therapeutic approach?

Gestalt differs from many other talk therapies.  Gestalt is a here-and-now therapy, meaning we focus on what is happening in each present moment of contact .The AIM of Gestalt therapy is to raise awareness in the client. Once awareness is gained, then change happens by itself, according to the Gestalt paradoxical theory of change.

Awareness in Gestalt is raised primarily through the vehicle of relationship. In other words the Gestalt therapist and client enter into a healing relationship of trust. Issues are brought by the client that are of concern or interest. The therapist uses self-as-instrument, for authentic feedback during dialogue. An example of this may be the therapist sharing how she feels when sadness is evoked during the sharing.

Gestalt is body-based and creative using body process, dream work, experimentation such as two chair work, to promote awareness and growth.

What will be basic training skills program include?

The design of the program will include lectures, demonstrations, pair work, working in triads, working in small groups, fish bowl demonstrations etc.  The trainee will be exposed to a wide range of experiential hands-on Gestalt methodology in the 48 hour time frame. There will be opportunity for creative exploration through drawing, movement, dream work and psycho drama.

The basic skills training will be tailored to the unique needs of the student group.  Many are already working with stress and trauma using body techniques such as TRE and QEC and will learn how to support clients who need to share what comes up during such work.

Will there be sufficient practice of the Gestalt method over 3 months of training?

  • A lot of time will be given during training to work in pairs and triads while being supervised.

  • Buddy pairs will be formed for practice in-between times. This may take place over skype.

  • Students will have two free sessions with the trainer and support trainer during the training.

  • Attendance at both workshops is required for full basic training. A certificate of attendance will be awarded at the end.
